Ten Years of Web Science – An Overview of the Next Ten Years

Ten years ago, Tim Berners-Lee, Wendy Hall, Jim Hendler, Nigel Shadbolt and Daniel J. Weitzner asked that we should not look at the World Wide Web from a purely technical perspective. They argued that it has been people building the web and, therefore, not only computer science must play a central role in further developing the web but also social sciences, law, the humanities, as well as medicine.

At that time, Facebook was only a phenomenon among a small group of American Ivy League students, Twitter was in the early development stage, and many people still looked down on Wikipedia. In the meantime, our way to find information, to communicate, to work, and to relax has become inseparably linked to the web and its infrastructure. However, along with the prospects of the web, risks also have grown – like observation, discrimination or crime.

The Web Science Trust Network of Research Labs, that L3S in Hanover and WeST in Koblenz belong to, will be celebrating ten years of Web Science in the worldwide event WebScience@10 taking place in Singapore, London, Chicago – and Berlin. The Leibniz-Gemeinschaft will host the event in Berlin allowing us to look into the future and to discuss the chances and risks of the web during an interdisciplinary afternoon with digital natives, companies, and scientists of various disciplines.
